Brachystachyum Genus - There are 2 listed species in this genus and I grow 1, Brachystachyum densiflorum. This one has reached about 7 feet tall and has spread quite some distance, forming an excellent hedge screen. Hardiness has increased, the deep freeze of 2/2007 caused leaf burn but no culm damage. This species reminds me of some of my Semiarundinaria species in that they stay short but produce lots of culms. In the Netherlands I saw B densiflorum well over 15 feet tall and rather attractive in a climate zone I would liken to 6b. Perhaps in time this will size up but for now I would consider it as a quickly forming low hedge species. This would be a good choice for a low hedge or for erosion control.
