Sarocalamus Genus -
I have one of the 2 species in this genus - Sarocalamus fangianus. This rare bamboo is known by many different names and has changed genus in the short time I have had it.  It has not been very noteworthy for me remaining much the same size as it was when I obtained.  I am not certain if it was attacked by voles or if it has been unhappy with my site selections as I have tried planting it in 2 different situations.  It has suffered 100% top kill each of the 3 winters here and I had almost thrown it away once but I noticed 2 very tiny rhizome buds that appeared to be swelling. It did indeed come back to life and I have elected to container grow it in hopes of helping it to gain some vigor.  I see not only conflicting names for this bamboo but also I have seen it listed as a clumping species but I believe it is a runner.  It is also often referred to as one of the favorite bamboos of pandas, something that I can not speak to.  I really can say no more about this one until a few more years when it will hopefully have established and is back in the ground.

This photo of Sarocalamus fangianus was taken 2 years ago in the site where I first planted it. It is now being container grown to try to help it establish some vigor.
