| Shibataea Genus - My 3 members of this genus have unique leaf forms, however I am unable to distinguish between S. chinensis & S. kumasaca - apparently the S. kumasaca will become taller over time. I believe that these plants will do well in sun or shade but they require acidic soils to maintain fresh looking leaves. I really want the Shibataea lancifolia to get taller and form a shrub as mine is thus far a ground hugger. I have recently planted some in a wetter & sunnier site to see if it will size up. These guys look good until temps approach the low single digits with the S. chinensis & S. kumasaca seeming noticeably hardier than S. lancifolia. |

Shibataea kumasaca, sometimes called 'bears claw' bamboo due to the unique leaf shape. The fern leaf plant in the foreground is Pleioblastus pygmaeus 'Ramosissimus'. |

Shibataea lancifolia, so far a ground cover for me I am hoping to have it realize its potential as a taller, rounded shrub. |
